Dental Cleanings (Hygiene)
Do you attend dental hygiene appointments, or dental cleanings, twice a year? You should! Hygiene visits are the best way to deter gum disease – the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults. Gum disease is linked to increased risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes complications, low-weight births, dementia, and other serious diseases. The symptoms can be so mild that you may not even notice a problem. Your hygiene visit every six months allows us to take proactive steps that could save your teeth and your health.
At a cleaning, you’ll meet with a trained and licensed dental hygienist who will remove sticky plaque, hardened plaque (tartar), and decaying food particles from your teeth. She’ll also look for signs of gum disease by checking your gum line for bacterial pockets. Gum disease is caused when bacteria from plaque begin to destroy the bond between teeth and gums. The bacteria breed in pockets at the base of teeth. Over time, gum disease causes gums to recede and teeth to loosen or fall out.
Your hygienist will clean your teeth and show you how to perform effective oral homecare with simple brushing and flossing techniques. If you show signs of early gingivitis or more serious level of gum disease, she will recommend a deep cleaning, along with a periodontal program to return your gums to good health.
